All representation is an act of abstraction and all abstraction must be conveyed through an act of representation. Both paths are essentially seeking a greater clarity, an expanding consciousness and a constantly increasing vocabulary where and declare our presence in the world.

My method of achieving this in my painting is somewhat related to automatism in that I don't set out to paint something. The painting takes on reality for me as I work and the picture begins to assert itself. In the beginning it is in the putting on of the paint that things happen. The forms become signs for woman, bird, boat, sea and spirit. The challenge now is to transform height, width and depth into two dimensions in a magical experience, wherein one hopes to glimpse a fourth dimension which we all seek.

Carolyne Harrison is a graduate of the Concordia Fine Arts program majoring in Studio Art. Her work is to be found in private collections in Canada and the U.K. She is represented by the Bonnie Leyton Gallery in St Johns, Nfld and Galerie Avenue Art, Montréal.

 Toute représentation est un acte abstrait et toute abstraction doit se communiqué par le biais de la représentation. Les deux voies vont essentiellement à la recherche d'une plus grande clarté, une reconnaissance élargie et un vocabulaire grandissant. De là, nous découvrons et proclamons notre présence dans le monde.

La méthode que j'adopte pour en faire l'illustration est reliée en quelque sorte à l'automatisme ; je ne pose pas de but précis au moment de me mettre devant mon chevalet. La toile prend vie pendant que peins et l'image commence à se concrétiser. Au départ, c'est l'application de la peinture qui enclenche le processus. Les formes deviennent des indices de femme, oiseau, bateau, mer ou esprit. Le défi est alors de convertir hauteur, largeur et profondeur en une expérience magique bi-dimensionelle, dans laquelle tout un chacun espère retrouver la quatrième dimension désirée de tous.
