The World as Calligraphy

This series of prints that plays freely with the image of writing, from pictographs on tablets to scrolls and manuscripts. They are exercises in calligraphy which may also suggest a narrative, a landscape, a musical score, a dance. They were composed on an iMac using a Painter program and printed on photo paper. The character of the print depends on the selection of colours and instruments (“pen”, “brush”, "watercolour", etc.) and on the vitality or mood of the wrist – or should I say the nimbleness of the mouse?

 Libre interprétation de signes graphiques, les dessins de D.G. Jones peuvent évoquer un paysage, une danse, une partition musicale, etc. Conçus par ordinateur iMac à partir d’un logiciel «Painter», ils sont imprimés sur papier photo. La personnalité de chaque provient de la couleur et de l’instrument choisis («plume», «pinceau», «aquarelle»…) mais aussi de la vitalité, de l’humeur du poignet ou, devrait-on dire, de la souplesse de la souris?
Initially gestural, the final insertion of a title or text in the design nudges it toward the representational. It becomes, one might say, a doodle with attitude.

Le dessin est tout d'abord gestuel, mais avec l'ajout d'un titre, d'un texte, il devient représentatif. Un croquis qui s'impose en somme.
